Mayoman to be bishop of Hexham & Newcastle

The Vatican has announced that a Mayoman is to become bishop of the English diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.

Monsignor Seamus Cunningham, 66, has been chosen by Pope Benedict to lead the 200,000-strong diocese.

He has been administering the diocese since the death of his predecessor ten months ago.

Seamus Cunningham was educated at St Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen and studied for the priesthood at the now defunct Waterford seminary, St John's.

In 1966, he was ordained priest for the Diocese which he will take charge of in March. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
