Students use church steps as 'open-air toilet'

A priest has said drunken students who urinated on the steps of his church had "lost all sense of the sacred".

Canon Jim Carroll of St Peter's Church in Drogheda said the incident happened as the students were on their way to a party.

Up to 100 students, on their way from Belfast in three buses to a party in Dublin, stopped off in the town for a break.

Canon Carroll said he was unaware that people had been desecrating the church grounds in this way.

"But I have noted the loss of the sense of the sacred surrounding churches and cemeteries in recent years," he said.

"I am saddened that many seem to have lost this sense that places are sacred."

A spokesman for Drogheda's Westcourt Hotel said the students had been asked to leave after it became clear many of them were already drunk.

"As responsible bar staff we wouldn't serve some of them because they had obviously had enough drink already taken," she said.

"They were using the steps of St Peter's and other parts of West Street as an open-air toilet."
