The Pope’s last visit to Austria in September 2007 failed to inspire the masses as record num- bers have stopped attending Roman Catholic Church in Austria last year.Catholic press agency Kathpress reported 40,595 Catholics had formally left the Church last year, compared to 36,858 in 2007.
At the same time, there was a small increase in the number of former Catholics who returned to the Church last year.
The dioceses reported 5,207 people returned to the Church in 2008.
