The prelates who chair the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops’ Committee on Migration and the Catholic Legal Immigration
Network have decried US policy toward Haitians fleeing the effects of
Hurricane Matthew.“We are concerned about [the Department of Homeland Security’s] recent immigration policies which separate and detain Haitian family members,” wrote Bishops Eusebio Elizondo and Kevin Vann, who were joined by the presidents of Catholic Charities USA and Catholic Relief Services.
“These policies are particularly inhumane in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew when our government should be showing Haitians compassion and support.”
The prelates issued their appeal and made four policy recommendations in a November 1 letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Secretary of State John Kerry.
