In an interview with the Vatican newspaper, the president of the
Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization said that the
faithful welcomed the recent jubilee year with joy.
“It allowed Christians a great sigh of relief,” Archbishop Rino Fisichella said in the interview, which appeared in L’Osservatore Romano’s November 23 edition.
“Do not forget that many times the Church has appeared more as a
‘stepmother’ than as a mother,” he continued. “And she appeared more
with the Code of Canon Law in hand, not the Gospel. For this reason, the
great breath that gives mercy was welcomed as a wind of spring.”
The prelate also discussed the initiatives mentioned in Pope Francis’s new apostolic exhortation, Misericordia et Misera.
