The 82,469 divorces recorded in Italy in 2015 represented a 57% leap over the previous year’s figures.
The number of legal separations rose only slightly, by 2.7%, suggesting that many couples had taken advantage of new laws to end their marriages immediately.
Two new laws have eased the process of divorce in Italy: in late 2014 legal procedures were streamlined and early in 2015 the required period of separation before divorce was dropped from three years to six months.
