Brazilian cardinal retires; successor named

Image result for Cardinal Raymundo AssisPope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Raymundo Assis, 79, from the governance of the Archdiocese of Aparecida, the city that is home to Brazil’s national Marian shrine.

Image result for Archbishop Orlando BrandesSt. John Paul II appointed him archbishop of Aparecida in 2004, and Pope Benedict XVI created him a cardinal in 2011.

Cardinal Assis’s successor is Archbishop Orlando Brandes, 71, of Londrina. 

The prelate was appointed bishop of Joinville, Brazil, in 1994, and archbishop of Londrina in 2006.
