Brazilian cardinal retires; successor named
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Raymundo Assis,
79, from the governance of the Archdiocese of Aparecida, the city that
is home to Brazil’s national Marian shrine.
St. John Paul II appointed him archbishop of Aparecida in 2004, and Pope Benedict XVI created him a cardinal in 2011.
Cardinal Assis’s successor is Archbishop Orlando Brandes, 71, of
Londrina.
The prelate was appointed bishop of Joinville, Brazil, in
1994, and archbishop of Londrina in 2006.
