Vatican digitizes 4.7 million photos of Pope John Paul II

The Vatican digitizes the photo archive of Pope John Paul II (1978–2005). 

As the portal " Vatican News " reported on Thursday, it is a stock of more than 4.7 million pictures from the nearly 27-year term. 

Included are photographs of 250 trips abroad and in Italy, as well as images of audiences, fairs and other events.

The negatives are to be digitally recorded and scientifically catalogued in order to make them accessible to researchers, media and interested parties worldwide. 

In addition, the originals are professionally restored, newly stored and permanently secured.

John Paul II was from 1978 until his death on 2nd. April 2005 head of the Catholic Church. He was previously Archbishop of Krakow. 

On the 27th. April 2014, Pope Francis' native Pole was canonized.
