Pope Leo XIV will return to Assisi to meet with the young members of the Franciscan family

The Holy See has published the program for the pastoral visit that Leo XIV will make on August 6 to Assisi on the occasion of the «Go! Franciscan Youth Meeting 2026».

During his stay, the Pontiff will meet with Franciscan youth, greet the ministers general of the various branches of the Franciscan Order, and celebrate Holy Mass in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

Meeting with the youth and the Franciscans

According to the program released by the Holy See Press Office, the papal helicopter will depart from the Vatican at 8:00 a.m. and land half an hour later at the “Migaghelli” sports field in Santa Maria degli Angeli.

Upon arrival, he will be welcomed by the Bishop of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino and Foligno, Bishop Felice Accrocca, along with various civil authorities, including the Undersecretary of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Alfredo Mantovano; the President of the Umbria Region, Stefania Proietti; the Prefect of Perugia, Francesco Zito; the Mayor of Assisi, Valter Stoppini; and the President of the Province of Perugia, Massimiliano Presciutti.

He will then proceed to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where he will be received by the ministers general of the three branches of the First Franciscan Order: Friar Massimo Fusarelli, Minister General of the Friars Minor; Friar Carlos Alberto Trovarelli, Minister General of the Friars Minor Conventual; and Friar Roberto Genuin, Minister General of the Friars Minor Capuchin.

At 8:45 a.m., the Pope will hold a meeting with the young participants of the «Go! Franciscan Youth Meeting 2026», during which he will answer three questions posed by them.

Later, in the convent cloister, he will greet the representatives of the Franciscan orders and address a few words to the bishops present and to the members of the National Committee for the VIII Centenary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

He will celebrate Holy Mass at Santa Maria degli Angeli

The Eucharistic celebration will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

After the Mass, Leo XIV will bid farewell to the authorities present and return to the Vatican. His arrival is scheduled for 12:45 p.m.

Second pastoral visit to Assisi

This will be Leo XIV’s second pastoral visit to the city of St. Francis since the beginning of his pontificate.

The Pope already traveled to Assisi on November 20, 2025, to close the 81st General Assembly of the Italian Episcopal Conference.

On that occasion, he prayed before the saint’s tomb in the Basilica of St. Francis and expressed to the Franciscan community his desire to return to the Umbrian city.
