Springfield's Roman Catholic bishop is hoping someone will return personal mementoes missing after an apparent break-in at his residence.
Among the missing items are a cross that is a symbol of The Most Rev. Timothy McDonnell's office, and a watch given to McDonnell by his parents, diocese spokesman Mark Dupont told The Republican newspaper of Springfield.
The pectoral cross - worn around his neck during formal ceremonies - was made from a crucifix McDonnell was given when he became a priest.
McDonnell was awakened at about 3 a.m. Tuesday by a burglar alarm, and police immediately responded, but didn't find anything amiss, police spokeswoman Marcia Brown said.
She said the bishop didn't notice anything was gone until he was getting ready for work later in the morning.
Also missing are a second watch, a ring and some cash.
Dupont said the bishop is not angry, noting the church "is all about forgiveness."
He said if the items somehow make their way back, "the bishop would be eternally grateful."
