Blair Said To Be Leaving Anglican Church To Become Catholic

Outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair is expected to announce that he will leave the Anglican Church to become a Roman Catholic, after a private meeting he had with Pope Benedict XVI today.

Blair may have informed the pontiff of his intentions to convert and sought his blessing at the audience, which he attended with his wife, Cherie, a Catholic, and their daughter Kathryn.

A Vatican statement said afterwards that Blair and the pope discussed "particularly delicate subjects," including the Middle East and the future of the European Union.

Blair, who steps down as prime minister on Wednesday, plans to begin formal religious preparations after the handover of power to Gordon Brown, according to sources cited by The Telegraph newspaper.

This marks Blair's third visit to the Vatican in four years and his last as prime minister
