British teen challenges policy barring chastity ring

An English teenager is going to court to challenge a school rule that forbids her from wearing a ring that symbolizes her commitment to chastity.

Lydia Playfoot, 16, has removed the silver ring that she habitually wears, on orders from the administration of the Millais School in West Sussex.

But while she is complying with school policy, she is also challenging the no-jewelry rule.

Playfoot argues that the ring is not a piece of jewelry but a sign of her religious commitment. She notes that Muslim and Sikh students at the same school are allowed to wear headscarves and bracelets.

The ring, inscribed with the Biblical verse, is worn by young people who have undertaken a commitment to remain virgins until marriage.

The "Silver Ring Thing" is an initiative promoted by American an Evangelical group.
