Des Moines Diocese Recommends Priest Be Defrocked (USA)

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Des Moines is seeking the removal of a priest who's accused of sexually abusing a child.

The diocese says it received an allegation against the Rev'd Phillip Hobt (pic'd here) in January.

The diocese says its review committee and police determined that the allegation was credible.

The committee recommended to Bishop Joseph Charron before his retirement that he seek Hobt's removal from the priesthood.

Hobt was placed on leave in February.

The diocese says he has begun the process to voluntarily be defrocked.

Hobt was ordained in 1992 and served three years at St. Augustin Parish in Des Moines.

He began serving St. Albert Catholic Schools in Council Bluffs in 1995.
