Irish Catholic leaders met with political leaders on April 25 for the first session in the government's program of dialogue with religious groups.
Archbishops Sean Brady of Armagh and Diarmuid Martin of Dublin led the Church delegation at the talks. Earlier this week the Irish government had kicked off the dialogue with religious leaders, meeting first with representatives of the (Anglican) Church of Ireland.
The conversation at the April 25 meeting reportedly centered on prospects for peace in Northern Ireland, immigration, the protection of marriage and family life, efforts by Catholic dioceses to protect children from abuse, and the future of stem-cell research.
A Church spokesman said that the first session with government leaders had been "a very constructive and helpful meeting."
He added that the dialogue was "a very welcome development, acknowledging as it does the vital role of religious faith in the lives of so many people in Ireland."
