In keeping with the tradition of the Catholic Church, Edward Cardinal Egan turns 75 today and has officially offered his letter of resignation to the pope.
The New York Archdiocese says the cardinal sent the letter last week, but he's not actually expected to be leaving his post anytime soon.
Pope Benedict is not required to accept Egan’s resignation, however some Catholics upset about the archdiocese's reorganization plan are hoping he does.
Others say Egan should stay on as the head of the archdiocese. "He's doing a good job,” said one New Yorker.
“He's doing what he has to do financially and fiscally; he's acting responsible."
"I think if they are supposed to retire at 75, maybe they should,” added another.
“Maybe we should start getting some younger people involved in the church, things might be a little different."
"I appreciate what Cardinal Egan has done for the Christian community, and as long as he'd like to stick around, I'm not opposed to it,” said a third.
The archdiocese says they don't know how long it will take the pope to respond to Egan’s letter.
