Christian groups plan to protest outside Britain's Parliament Wednesday during a House of Lords debate on a measure allowing gay couples to adopt.
All bishops of the Church of England have received an open letter from lay members of the General Synod urging the 26 bishops in the House of Lords to oppose the proposed sexual orientation regulations, The Times of London reports.
The aim of the regulations is to outlaw discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation in relation to providing goods, services, facilities, premises, education and public functions.
The Roman Catholic Church, which has been leading the fight against the regulations, fears its adoption agencies could be put out of business since accepting public funding to facilitate gay adoption would flout Catholic teaching.
Observers say if the bishops are successful in persuading the House of Lords to defeat the regulations, it is certain to fuel the government's determination to press for a 100 percent elected upper chamber.
