Church To Lobby MPs Over Cloning Bill (Australia)

The Catholic Church has vowed to fight legislation to overturn the ban on therapeutic cloning in Western Australia.

The WA Government has introduced a Bill into Parliament allowing researchers to create human embryos to find a cure for life-threatening diseases.

The legislation is expected to cause divisions within both major parties when it goes to a conscience vote.

The Catholic Archbishop of Perth, Barry Hickey, says the Church opposes the legislation and will present its case strongly to MPs.

"Act according to your conscience, not according to your party and make sure it's an informed conscience giving value to the sacred nature of every human being," he said.

"The creation of a human embryo in order to destroy it to get stem cells is a very wrong action and no government should permit it."

The Government hopes to have the legislation passed by June.
