Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) will preside at a Mass in St. Peter's Square on April 2 to mark the 2nd anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II (bio - news), the Vatican has announced.
The scheduling of an outdoor Mass, rather than a celebration in the Vatican basilica, indicates that the office of papal liturgies expects a very large congregation to join in commemorating the death of the beloved Polish Pontiff.
Later, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the vicar for the Rome diocese, will formally conclude the first phase of the investigation in the cause for the late Pope's beatification.
Last year over 100,000 people came to the Vatican to mark the first anniversary of Pope John Paul's death.
The anniversary itself fell on a Sunday, but 30,000 people attended a Mass that Pope Benedict celebrated the following day, April 3, in St. Peter's Square.
