The closure of St Anthony's Friary in Athlone remains earmarked for Friday, October 4.
The Franciscan Friary has been kept open by a volunteer group numbering up to 80 people over the past two years, following the withdrawal of the Franciscan Order from the town, with visiting priests celebrating Masses at the place of worship
However, in late August, the Franciscans informed the group they would no longer be able to provide priests for twice-weekly Masses or to continue the general administration and operation of the church.
At this stage, it appears the final mass will be celebrated on Thursday next, October 3.
The local volunteer group has reiterated its call for a charitable organisation, with agreement from the local bishop, to take over full responsibility for the Church building and any services therein.
