Thomas Finnon broke into the house only weeks after completing a jail sentence for the same crime.
Finnon, who is homeless, had previously been given food and assistance by the priest and his congregation at St Augustine's Church in Dundyvan Road, Coatbridge.
The 43-year-old was jailed for 18 months at Airdrie Sheriff Court this week after admitting breaking into the priest's home on July 19, Lanarkshire Live reports.
The court heard that Finnon was freed from prison in May after a similar raid at the clergyman's house in August last year.
On that occasion he was caught on CCTV climbing into the dining room after smashing a window.
Nothing was stolen.
Annette Ward, prosecuting, said the latest break-in happened during the afternoon when the priest was out.
She told the court: "A church volunteer noticed that a ground floor bedroom window had been broken.
"A short time later, the priest arrived and viewed CCTV. This showed Finnon walking around the property before smashing the window
"He was then seen leaving through the broken window. There is no indication that anything was taken.
"While the priest and volunteer were waiting for the police to arrive, Finnon was seen on live footage at the front of the property and the priest went to speak to him.
"After Finnon was arrested he disclosed that he had consumed a large quantity of tablets. Police officers took him to hospital for a welfare check."
Defence lawyer Roberto Manini praised the priest's response, saying: "He is clearly a man who practises what he preaches.
"Despite what had happened he went to speak to the accused and check on his welfare.
"My client has no great recollection of what he did, but he is disgusted by his behaviour.
"The priest and the people at the church have only tried to assist him by, for example, giving him food when he was homeless."
"I also take into consideration that you were on licence when this took place."
