Pope opens Rome diocesan convention

Pope Benedict XVI opened an annual convention of the Rome diocese on June 11 in a ceremony at the basilica of St. John Lateran.

The Holy Father greeted the priests, religious, and laymen participating in the ecclesial congress, which will run through June 14.

The goal of the meeting is to set priorities for religious education in the diocese.

In his remarks the Pope said that Catholic schools provide an invaluable service by giving their students a "unified vision," combining education in secular topics with a firm grasp of religious truth.

In public schools, the Pontiff continued, a healthy secular approach should not close off access to the transcendent, nor ignore the moral dimensions of human life.
