The President-elect of the Methodist Church, the Rev Roy Cooper, made history last evening when he was installed in a Catholic church in Cork.
"My installation in the Church of the Incarnation will be the first time that a Methodist President anywhere in the world will be installed in a Roman Catholic Church," the Rev Cooper said yesterday.
The installation marked the start of the annual Methodist Conference in Cork, with delegates attending from both parts of Ireland.
Over the weekend and early next week, the delegates will consider a range of issues, including a report, Human Sexuality.
The Rev Cooper, minister of Regent Street, Newtownards, was born and educated in the Shankill Road area of Belfast.
He previous jobs spells in a printers and a Harland and Wolff shipyard office before opting for a full-time post in the ministry.
He spent 18 years as a cleric in the Republic before returning to Northern Ireland in 1996.
Since 2004 he has been Superintendent of the Newtownards, Movilla Abbey and Comber Circuit.
