Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, who turns 75 in August, is set to submit his letter of retirement to Pope Benedict XVI.
"It's SOP (standing operating procedure) among the prelates pushing 75, the year of their retirement," Peachy Yamsuan, spokesperson of the Manila Archdiocese, said Sunday in a phone interview.
She said it was up to the Pope to accept the cardinal's resignation.
Meanwhile, outspoken Dagupan-Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz has reportedly tendered his resignation to the Vatican.
The Inquirer tried but failed to contact Cruz to confirm the report.
Msgr. Pedro Quitorio III, spokesperson of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), told the Philippine Daily Inquirer by phone Sunday that there were a number of bishops and archbishops retiring this year.
Yamsuan said she was not certain if Rosales had already submitted his letter of retirement to the Pope.
She said the cardinal, whose birthday is on Aug. 10, was scheduled to fly to the Vatican later this month.
In a recent interview over Church-run Radio Veritas, Rosales said he had written his resignation letter on June 10.
