
Polish Catholic Church welcomes the newly nominated metropolitan of Warsaw, archbishop Kazimierz Nycz. Since Pope Benedict XVI announced the nomination on Saturday, commentators have praised the long-awaited decision.
Archbishop Nycz is to take the post vacated by archbishop Wielgus who resigned on January 7th, two days after taking the office, amid scandal triggered by information of his past involvement with communist-era secret police.
The nominee said that he sees the nomination as a great challenge, but a gift as well. In an interview for the radio, archbishop Nycz revealed that the Pope's decision came to him as a surprise. He asked the faithful to support him with prayer.
Fr. Isakowicz - Zaleski, author of a major publication on the Catholic Church in the times of communist regime in Poland said that the new nominee has an exemplary past of heroic opposition to the temptations of collaboration with communists.
According to the communist secret services documents, archbishop Nycz was approached by communist functionaries numerous times and pressured to become a secret spy, but had the courage to say "no".
Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, close friend to of the late Pope John Paul II has said that the whole of Poland rejoices over the new nomination. Cardinal Dziwisz added that he is grateful to the Pope for his decision.
The investiture of the new archbishop is to take place on March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation.
