An Irish Catholic priest who was wounded in a gun attack in South Africa has been undergoing surgery at a hospital in Pretoria.
Fr Kieran Creagh (pic'd alongside), who is from Belfast and a member of the Passionist Order, was attacked yesterday by an armed gang at a hospice which he established in Johannesburg.
The missionary's father and one of his brothers have joined him at the hospital.
The operation he has been undergoing is to remove a bullet lodged in his lung.
According to Fr Creagh's brother Liam, the incident began when two men overpowered guards and rang the bell at the hospice. Fr Creagh thought he was answering the door to a patient when the armed men entered.
A struggle ensued and at least two shots were fired; one shot hit him in the lung and the other went through his arm.
Fr Creagh, 45, volunteered to be injected with a trial HIV vaccine and was named Irish International Personality of the Year in 2004.
