Hungarian Catholic Bishop Resigns, Expected To Marry

The Vatican last week announced that Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Hungarian Catholic bishop Tamás Szabó.

The reasons for the bishop's resignation were said to be "personal," and no official explanation has been given since the announcement.

But according to speculation in the Hungarian press, the most likely reason for Szabó's departure from the priesthood is his desire to get married.

Szabó's resignation came as surprise to the church, as he did not mention his plans at a recent conference of the board of Catholic bishops.

Szabó met his fiancée in the Catholic charismatic movement, while others believes the woman is a soldier, serving at the ministry of defense. But both scenarios are possible.

In an interview with daily Népszabadság, Szabó declined to speak about the matter, saying he considers the case to be personal, and that he has a constitutional right to privacy.

An expert who asked for their name to be withheld said that they could not recall another case in which a Hungarian bishop had resigned in order to get married.
