Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow, Poland, has decried the intense focus on reports of clerical collaboration with former Communist regimes. The cardinal said that the media frenzy over such reports has spawned ugly conspiracy theories all across central Europe.
Cardinal Dziwisz, who is the longtime personal secretary to the late Pope John Paul II said that the accusations amounted to a campaign that impugns the reputation of the late Pontiff.
Specifically, Cardinal Dziwisz condemned stories suggesting that Archbishop Henryk Nowacki, who is now the apostolic nuncio in Slovakia, had collaborated with the Polish secret police during his term as an official at the Vatican Secretariat of State.
The cardinal came forcefully to Archbishop Nowacki’s defense.
“To attack this man is to attack all Poles who worked with John Paul II,” he said; “and therefore it is to attack the Servant of God John Paul II himself.”
