African church leader praises Mbeki for resignation decision

The general secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches has praised President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa for putting his country first, by announcing his resignation after losing the confidence of the ruling African National Congress.

"He has demonstrated to us that a country is bigger than an individual," said the Rev. Mvume Dandala, a Methodist from South Africa who has led the Nairobi-based AACC since 2003.

"What happened in South Africa is commendable in terms of the African context," Dandala said. "Mbeki has demonstrated respect for institutions of leadership."
