The three elderly Augustinian nuns from Goldenstein can continue to live in their traditional convent.
That is the essence of a proposed solution presented on Friday by the superior of the sisters appointed by the Vatican, Reichersberg Provost Markus Grasl.
"I am still of the opinion that the sisters would receive comprehensive care in a nursing home, but I take the wishes of the three very seriously and as the superior of the order, for whom the well-being of the sisters is of course absolutely important, I would like to offer a possibility for the future," said Grasl.
The proposal that is now being presented to the sisters was reportedly drawn up after intensive discussions with Rome and the Archdiocese of Salzburg.
It envisages that the three sisters will be allowed to live in the convent until further notice and that the cloister necessary for a spiritual life in the convent will be restored.
A religious priest from the Augustinian monastery in Reichersberg will be available to provide spiritual counselling for the sisters.
24-hour nursing and medical care will be provided.
In an emergency, places will be available in the Elsbethen nursing home within sight of the monastery.
The provost also wants to take care of any necessary remodelling work in the monastery.
Instagram channel soon to be history?
The proposal in the press release mentions "key points."
The provost's spokesperson explained to katholisch.de that the successful Instagram channel would also have to come to an end.
"The Instagram channel conveys an image of religious life to the public that does not correspond to the reality of life in a monastic community, even though the channel has numerous followers," said the spokesperson.
In addition, all legal steps taken by the sisters against the provost must be ended.
These measures would secure the future of the sisters: "I hope that the sisters will accept the path I have outlined and hope that a regulated religious life in Goldenstein will once again be a reality." The proposal is to be presented to the sisters' helpers today. The Provost combines his initiative with thanks to the people who have supported the sisters since their return to the convent. They are still welcome as guests in the convent, even if their work is no longer necessary.
Use donations and book proceeds for social project?
According to the provost, the donations accepted by the sisters and the proceeds from their book would no longer be needed for their livelihood and the convent with the solution now offered.
"The education of young girls and women was particularly important to the sisters, hence the idea of allocating the donations to such a project, as the sisters - as before - receive all the necessary funding from the Goldenstein convent," says Grasl.
The case of the three sisters has been in the media since September: the three nuns moved out of a Caritas retirement home in September and then gained access to their former convent with the help of a locksmith.
The Goldenstein convent had become the property of the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the Austrian canon monastery of Reichersberg in 2022.
In the meantime, the three sisters have built up a broad network that supports them in the old convent they occupy.
