Christmas tree from South Tyrol erected in the Vatican

This year' s Christmas tree in St Peter's Square comes from the Ultental Valley in South Tyrol.

As the Vatican state government announced on Thursday, the 35 metre high spruce was felled on Monday in the province of Bolzano and erected on Thursday morning with the help of a huge crane.

A further 40 smaller Christmas trees were also delivered from there to the Vatican. Among other things, they will decorate the Pope's flat during Advent.

Meanwhile, the construction of the traditional nativity scene with life-size figures in St Peter's Square is also progressing.

This year it comes from the province of Salerno in southern Italy.
