First long journey within Italy: Pope Leo XIV visits Assisi

For the first time, Pope Leo XIV has undertaken a longer journey within Italy.

In Assisi on Thursday, he met with the members of the Italian Bishops' Conference, who had held their autumn plenary session in the Umbrian pilgrimage site.

Leo XIV also prayed at the tomb of St Francis (1181-1226), the patron saint of Italy.

Next year will see celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of his death.

According to the Vatican press office, Leo XIV then wanted to visit the Augustinian convent in Montefalco.

A church service with the nuns and a joint lunch were planned there.

The Pope is an Augustinian himself and regularly visits branches of this order.

In a week's time, Leo XIV set off on his first trip abroad.

It will take him to Turkey and Lebanon.
