Will women soon be able to become deacons in the Catholic Church?
The results of a study commission appointed by the Pope for this purpose are to be announced soon.
This emerges from a publication by the Vatican Synod Secretariat on Monday.
It lists the status of investigations into a number of controversial issues in the Catholic Church.
Two committees in the Vatican are currently looking into the role of women.
One study group is examining their position in the life and leadership of the institution, while another is explicitly looking at the question of a diaconate for women.
Reform-minded Catholics have been calling for years for all ministries and offices in the Catholic Church to be opened up to women.
Results at the end of 2025
As part of his worldwide reform project, the World Synod, Pope Francis (2013-2025) had outsourced some sensitive issues within the Church to separate study groups.
In addition to the issue of women, the committees will also deal with the training of priests, the figure of the bishop, relations with other churches and the topics of poverty and polygamy.
The groups are to submit their study results and recommendations to Pope Leo XIV by the end of the year.
Following the death of his predecessor Francis, he extended the deadline for the final reports by six months and set up two further study groups.
