The Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Rt Rev Andrew Forster, has welcomed Pope Leo XIV’s appointment of Bishop Niall Coll, until now the Bishop of Ossory, as the new Bishop of Raphoe. The appointment was announced this morning by the Vatican.
For the past three years, Bishop Coll – who was born in Saint Johnston and received his early education there and in Letterkenny – had been serving as the Bishop of Ossory.

“I extend a warm welcome ‘home’ to my brother in Christ, Bishop Niall Coll, following his appointment, this morning, by Pope Leo as Bishop of the Diocese of Raphoe. As a son of the diocese, Bishop Niall is acutely aware of the sense of history surrounding his appointment, as he seeks to follow in the footsteps of Saint Columba and Saint Eunan.
“Bishop Niall is a man of profound faith and deep humility, and has shown great leadership in building relations with other denominations. I am encouraged that in his first public remarks after his appointment, the Bishop stressed the need – in a world where faith was often met with indifference and even hostility – to offer the Gospel as the answer to the deepest questions of the human heart.
“I look forward to walking alongside Bishop Niall in faith as we seek to share the light of Christ in our dioceses, and I assure Niall of my wholehearted, prayerful support in this new phase in his ministry.
