Bishop David Oakley - UPDATE

Message from Archbishop Bernard concerning Bishop David Oakley: ‘Last weekend Northampton Diocese communicated that Bishop David Oakley is currently on a leave of absence.

Further to this, yesterday evening the Vicar General of Northampton Diocese provided an update to their clergy as follows: “As you are aware, we recently announced that Bishop David Oakley is on a leave of absence for personal reasons. I now find it necessary, due to press interest, to clarify that the leave of absence is due to an allegation made to police against Bishop David.

Therefore, in accordance with the safeguarding policies and procedures of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Bishop David has temporarily withdrawn from public ministry. Such a withdrawal from public ministry does not constitute Bishop David’s removal from office as Bishop of Northampton, nor does it in any way imply guilt.

I can assure you that the Diocese of Northampton is fully cooperating with an ongoing police investigation and therefore will be unable to provide any further comment at this time.”

We recognise that this is a difficult time for everyone affected by this news.

I would like to assure you that both Bishop David and the complainant are being supported and that our own diocesan safeguarding team is there to support clergy and anyone who may come forward.
