A work of art depicting US President Donald Trump on a cross will be shown in Basel, Switzerland, despite ongoing criticism. This was announced by the Gleis 4 gallery in Zug on Friday.
The internationally discussed work "Saint or Sinner" by Mason Storm will be on display behind glass in Basel's Kunstmeile for a fortnight from 1 November.
The sculpture by the British artist depicts Trump in an orange-coloured prison suit. He is strapped to a white cross, reminiscent of a cot used in the USA for executions by lethal injection.
The work was originally intended to be shown in September in the hall of the former brasserie in the west wing of the station building. After heavy criticism from the church and society, the plan was cancelled for security reasons.
Deliberately chosen timing
According to the gallery, the timing of the newly planned exhibition was chosen deliberately.
All Saints' Day commemorates not only those who have been officially canonised, but all people who have led an exemplary life.
In this context, Storm's work radically poses the question of whether someone can be a saint and a sinner at the same time. "And who has the right to judge that?"
By leaving the answer to these questions to the audience, the artist gives the viewer the role of judge, saviour and witness. "Provocation is not an end in itself here, but a method of enlightenment," the gallery advertises the show. The work is therefore "a test of our own moral standards".
While Trump describes himself as a peacemaker and at the same time is accused of sexual offences and moral failure, the artwork is "more topical than ever", it continues.
It forces the viewer to make a decision and confronts them with the question: "By what criteria do we judge?"
