Swiss Guard denies preparation for Pope's death

The Swiss Guard has denied reports of preparations for Pope Francis' death in its ranks.

There are neither curfews for the guardsmen nor rehearsals for the Pope's funeral, Swiss Guard Captain Christian Kühne told the Catholic News Agency (KNA) on Wednesday afternoon.

The Swiss newspaper "Blick" had previously reported on this. "We are continuing to work as normal," said Kühne.

The 88-year-old Pope has been receiving treatment in Rome's Gemelli Hospital since last Friday.

What started as bronchitis has now developed into pneumonia.

The pontiff's treatment is proving to be complex and difficult due to several ailments.

A total of 135 men serve in the Swiss Guard. Their main task is to watch over the security of the person and residence of the head of the church.

Guardsmen also accompany the Pope on trips, control the entrances to the Vatican City State and perform duties of order and honour.
