Lent calendar prayer and reflection for 16 March

Happy is the man who has placed his trust in the Lord. He is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season.

Psalm 1:1-4,6. R. Ps 39:5
Today we reflect on the image of a beautiful fruit tree. Its roots grow from a fresh water spring.

It boasts colourful fruits which are good to eat, and its green leaves never wither or fade.

Each one of us is called to live like this fruit tree. To place our trust in God, so that we can offer comfort and peace to everyone around us. To refuse to be tainted by the world, and never give up hope. In this way, we will know true joy.

Pope Francis reflects on this way of living in Laudato Si’. He invites us to “return to that simplicity which allows us to stop and appreciate the small things, to be grateful for the opportunities which life affords us, to be spiritually detached from what we possess, and not to succumb to sadness for what we lack” (#222).

Livesimply is a way for us to return to this simple way of living, to appreciate God’s creation, and to give generously to our neighbours. Schools and parishes can sign up to this award by getting stuck into activities such as recycling or giving to a foodbank.

Pray

Creator God, draw us closer to you and inspire us to let your goodness blossom. Amen.
