A Cork City based priest has spoken out against what he perceives as
an 'increasing advanced liberalism” permeating Irish society.
Speaking at mass in Ballyphehane last week Fr Tomás Walsh SMA, was
critical of the way society forbids people to hold views which may be
politically incorrect.
Fr Walsh was speaking in response to comments
made by the newly elected chairperson of the Donagh O'Malley Fianna Fáil
Cumman in UCC, Eoin Furlong.
Before his election as chairperson of Fianna Fáil's largest Cumman,
Mr Furlong had written a blog claiming that the lifestyles engaged in by
the majority of homosexuals was something that he could not accept.
However, after his election he removed such views from his daily blog
and distanced himself from them in interviews with the national media.
However, while not necessarily supporting Mr Furlong's views, Fr
Walsh claimed that Mr Furlong was only one in a long line of people who
have retracted politically incorrect views, “under the tyranny of
advanced liberalism now sweeping the western world.”
“This new type of advanced liberalism forbids us forming opinions
that some things are immoral, denies us the right to make judgements and
forbids us from being shocked or outraged.”
He added, “Here is someone aspiring to be part of a political era of
transparency and the next thing he turns his back on his opinions when
such views were considered mainstream for years. I don't mind what
views you have as long as you don't suddenly turn your back on them.”
