The diocese of Ossory has launched a new account on the social
networking site Twitter as part of its Lenten evangelisation programme.
The diocese’s Adult Faith Development Group hopes the site will
foster more effective communication with a broader base of the faithful
in the run-up to Easter.
Announcing details of this year’s Diocesan Lenten Programme at St
Kieran’s College, Fr Dermot Ryan said people, “are now accessing news,
reflecting on ideas and asking questions in a new way, and it is only
natural that we as a faith community should try to engage with people
there.”
As well as being able to talk about faith matters on the diocese’s
Twitter account, the Lenten programme will also promote the faith
through audio CDs, scripture books, pilgrimages, public speaking
competitions and seminars on various themes.
The diocese hopes these
initiatives will help Catholics to explore and rediscover the faith in
more contemporary ways.
Fr Ryan said that if the diocese does not offer these modern options,
it “would be failing in the task to promote the Kingdom of God in our
world today.”
The Ossory Adult Faith Development Group was established by Bishop
Seamus Freeman in September 2009 and works with parishes and the
Diocesan Pastoral Council in assisting Catholics to engage afresh with
and to ask questions about their faith.
