Pope Benedict XVI called on Thursday for Roman Catholic organisations to help the victims of the deadly earthquake that shook Peru, a Vatican statement said.
The Pope sent "his sincerest condolences to the families of the dead" and said he felt "spiritually close to the wounded and homeless".
He encouraged "institutions and people of goodwill to give the necessary help to those in need with charity and in the spirit of Christian solidarity".
A strong earthquake registering 7.9 on the Richter Scale hit the south coast of Peru and its capital, Lima, late Wednesday.
Over 300 people were reported dead and more than 800 injured in a preliminary toll on Thursday.
