Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday that he is sending his top aide to quake-stricken Peru as a sign of his concern.
"In these days our thoughts and our prayers are constantly centered on the population of Peru, struck by a devastating earthquake,'' Benedict told tourists and pilgrims at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, in the Alban Hills outside Rome.
"For the many dead I invoke the peace of the Lord,'' Benedict said, referring to the more than 500 victims of Wednesday's magnitude-8 quake.
He also said he was praying that the injured make a swift recovery.
"For those who are left in miserable condition, I assure that the Church is with you, with all its spiritual and material solidarity,'' the pontiff added.
The Vatican's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, "who for some time had been planning to visit Peru, will go there in the next few days to bring the witness of my sentiment and the concrete aid of the Holy See,'' the pontiff said.
Benedict did not say how much aid the Vatican would donate, but the Holy See frequently gives financial assistance after natural disasters.
