Green Party Proposes End Of Funding To Catholic Schools

The provincial election is only months away, and as always, education is the hot topic among Ontario voters.

The latest front-burner issue is funding for faith-based schools.

Conservative Leader John Tory got the ball rolling when he proposed extending funding to Muslim and Jewish schools, provided they also teach provincial curriculum.

The Liberals and the NDP have stated they do not want to see any changes to faith based funding.

And the Green party?

Leader Frank de Jong proposed cutting funding for Catholic education.

De Jong said that Ontario is becoming a more secular province, and the school system should reflect this.

The Greens haven't been getting much coverage in the lead-up to the election.

McGuinty made headlines in early August with increases to education, and Tory initially proposed extending funding in July.

The Green plan may help widen their support base - they've never elected a candidate in Ontario.

The province has funded Catholic high schools since 1980.
