Raleigh Diocese refers case involving Wilmington priest to law enforcement

The Catholic Diocese of Raleigh has conducted an investigation into allegations of financial irregularities at a church in New Hanover County, and has referred the case to law enforcement.

In an email sent to parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, a statement from the Diocese said: “Following a preliminary investigation into financial irregularities conducted by third-party accounting and legal professionals, the matter involving Father John McGee, OSFS, has been referred to law enforcement officials”.

The statement did not include details regarding the allegations. Officials at the diocese told WECT News they have no further comment at this time.

The investigation followed the sudden departure of Father McGee from Immaculate Conception, and an announcement made by the Diocese on October 2: “Very Reverend John McGee, O.S.F.S., V.F., resigns as Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Wilmington and Dean of the Cape Fear Deanery”.

Father McGee was appointed pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in 2008.
