Newborn baby found in a parish church in Rome

A churchgoer found a newborn baby in Rome on Friday, November 6.

He discovered the baby in the afternoon at the parish church of San Gregorio Magno in the Magliana district and called for help.

After an initial examination at the scene, emergency services took the newborn to San Camillo-Forlanini hospital.

The churchgoer noticed the baby near the altar at around 16.30.

Rome's Ares 118 emergency service sent a doctor-led emergency vehicle and an ambulance to the parish.

The teams first examined the baby in the church and then handed the infant over to the hospital for further care.

The baby's general condition was good at the initial examination.

Responders estimated that the baby had been born only one or two days earlier.

The Carabinieri also came to the church.

Officers from the Villa Bonelli station and a mobile unit from Rome were involved.

While emergency workers cared for the baby, the officers began reconstructing the events leading up to the discovery.

Newborn found in Rome: Carabinieri review footage

Footage from the parish church shows a person leaving the baby near the altar and then exiting the building.

The Carabinieri sought further footage from the surrounding area to trace the person's route. Their identity and relationship to the baby were initially unclear.

The circumstances of the birth were also unknown at that point.

The parish priest of San Gregorio Magno commented on the community's response after the discovery.

He said the parish did not know the person's reasons and did not want to pass judgment.

The parish was open to people who needed help.
