Fr Chris Alar, MIC, a priest of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception, has delivered a powerful sermon in which he criticises Archbishop Weisenburger of Detroit for his ICE protests whilst parishes face closure, blasts Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed for comparing canon law to Sharia law and calls Senator-elect James Talarico’s defence of abortion as biblical satanic.
In a 16-minute homily published on the Marian Fathers’ YouTube channel, the Massachusetts-based priest also criticised Representative-elect Darializa Avila Chevalier’s 2019 X post in which she described using the US flag as a napkin. He also criticised Catholics for allowing the election of overwhelmingly pro-abortion politicians.
The priest references the saints’ prophecies that at the end of time there will be a chastisement, an “illumination of conscience”, the coming of the Antichrist and an era of peace with the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the coming of Christ. Fr Alar then asks the congregation: “Are we beginning this process?”
Fr Alar also warns Catholics about government control, which is taking away responsibilities traditionally exercised by the Church, including healthcare, education and charitable provision, and putting them in the hands of the government, which does “a very bad job of it”. He further states that the Church has warned the faithful about this, that the government “is not the one to do this”, lamenting that “this is what we have just voted in”.
Fr Alar references Quadragesimo anno, Pope Pius XI’s 1931 papal encyclical, which he states teaches that “Christian socialism are contradictory terms” and “no one can be at the same time a good Catholic and a true socialist”, and his 1937 encyclical Divini Redemptoris, which he describes as a “comprehensive condemnation of atheism and communism”.
He also points to Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum novarum, which he describes as teaching that “socialism abolishes private property, harms workers, weakens families and increases state control”, and Pope St John Paul II’s Centesimus annus, in which he “criticized socialism because it subordinates the individual to the state, an atheistic state, and misunderstands the nature of the human person”.
He states that the Church teaches neither socialism nor “unbridled capitalism”, but rather distributism, a philosophy favouring widespread private ownership over concentrated wealth and power in the hands of corporations or the state.
Fr Alar also makes reference to Dearborn, Michigan, where he states that Christians have been “completely eliminated” and that when Christians challenged “some of the things happening in Islamic controlled town”, they were “basically forced out”.
It appears Fr Alar is referring to the protest in August of this year, when Jake Lang and Pastor Lorenzo Sewell organised a “Christian Crusader March” to oppose the “Islamification of America”. The protest was met with a huge counter-protest, with 22 arrests.
He continues by referencing Archbishop Weisenburger of Detroit, whom he describes as “spending all his time protesting against law enforcement” whilst “106 of his parishes have announced they will be eliminating weekend Masses”.
Archbishop Weisenburger, who was one of Pope Francis’s last US episcopal appointments, made headlines almost as soon as he was made Archbishop of Detroit for terminating three professors at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, including internationally renowned theologian Dr Ralph Martin.
The Archbishop has become known for his participation in anti-ICE rallies, attending one as recently as 30 October in southwest Detroit’s Clark Park.
Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Detroit is undergoing a major restructuring programme, with proposals that could see dozens of churches lose their regular weekend Masses.
Fr Alar particularly references Senator-elect James Talarico of Texas, whose election campaign frequently saw him claim that abortion was compatible with Christian teaching.
Talarico claimed that since Our Lady responded to God telling her that she would give birth to Jesus by saying “Let it be”, she therefore had to consent to the action, which, he alleges, implies pregnancy “has to be done with freedom”.
Fr Alar states that “this is satanic, this is terrible”.
Talarico has cited Pope Leo XIV and Pope Francis as his “spiritual heroes”, but denounces much of Catholic teaching, particularly regarding the sanctity of life and marriage.
