Wicklow church counting costs after weather vane on 249-year-old dome damaged in Storm Bram

Some of the damage caused by Storm Bram as it galloped through the county last Tuesday was still being identified days later, with the strong winds bending over the weather vane on top of Wicklow Parish Church in Wicklow town.

The exact cost of the repair works will not be ascertained until steeplejack companies who have been contacted about the damage respond with an outline of the works required and a costing.

The exact date the weather vane was first erected remains unclear, but the dome it sits atop of was built by the Eadon family back in 1776.

Rev Jack Kinkead said: “It got a bit bent over by Storm Bram, but no other damage to the church was caused. We got some drone operators to fly over the church so we could take some pictures and get a close-up view of the damage caused. We have sent the pictures on to some steeplejack companies to get their expert advice and input. There is a metal rod that goes up through the dome, and the weather vane got a little bent over.

“In the meantime we will take the weather vane down and see what can be done with it. At the moment we don’t know what the costs involved will be until we hear back from the steeplejack companies we contacted, but it’s not an easily accessible job so I don’t imagine it will be cheap, so we may have to consider some fundraising to cover the costs.”

The area directly under the weather vane has been cordoned off to prevent vehicles from parking there.
