The Catholic Diocese of Columbus is responding to heightened federal immigration efforts by excusing some parishioners from attending Christmas Mass.
Bishop Earl K. Fernandes posted a video statement on Facebook on Tuesday, addressing the increased presence of federal agents near churches and schools, which he said is "creating an atmosphere of fear rather than security and peace, which we all desire."
Fernandes announced a dispensation for individuals who "reasonably fear being detained," including those with legal documentation who fear family separation or intimidation due to their status or ethnic background.
The dispensation will remain in effect through Jan. 11, 2026, the end of the Christmas season.
Despite the dispensation, Fernandes assured that churches will remain open during this period.
