Church of England to broadcast service for key workers on shift on Christmas Day

The Church of England has created its first dedicated online Christmas service for the more than a million key workers who will be working on Christmas Day, including healthcare professionals, emergency services, and other essential staff.

The service was created in response to requests from hospital chaplains for a format that staff can join during breaks. It was designed to be accessible to those working shifts, lasting just 15 minutes.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Elect, Sarah Mullally, who worked as a nurse before her ordination, said in the online service: “On this Christmas Day, I want to extend my thanks to all who are working in the service of others while many of us gather with family, friends and in church to celebrate. Your work reflects the heart of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve.

“I have fond memories of Christmas Days which I worked as a nurse. Although not always easy, it is a privilege to be with people who need us most at this time. And of course, we receive so much from them too.

“Your dedication brings light and hope into the lives of those who need it most and we pray that you may know His peace and joy today. Happy Christmas!”

The service includes a Gospel reading, sermon, prayers, and music, with contributions from chaplains and key workers from Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust, the London Fire Brigade and Police Chaplaincy UK, with music from the London Metropolitan Police Choir and the London Fire Brigade Choir.

The service will be available on the Church of England YouTube channel from 6.00a.m. on Christmas Day.
