The abuse study for the diocese of Passau is finished.
It was handed over to the Independent Commission for the Reappraisal of Abuse and the Diocese's Advisory Board for Victims on Saturday, as the diocese announced on its website.
It was also sent to Bishop Stefan Oster. The study was carried out on behalf of the commission by a team from the University of Passau under the direction of historian Marc von Knorring.
The results will be published on the university's website from 8 December.
The study is entitled "Sexual abuse and physical violence. Assaults on minors by Catholic clergy in the diocese of Passau 1945 to 2022".
For three years, around 2,400 priests' personal files were scrutinised and 25 victims and almost 35 other contemporary witnesses were interviewed.
Von Knorring had already announced this framework data in advance to the "Passauer Bistumsblatt".
Another building block
According to the historian, the basic aim of the study is to support those affected in their fight for recognition and appropriate acknowledgement.
It may also be possible to initiate necessary reforms within the Catholic Church and provide impetus for better prevention.
For his part, Oster explained that his first thought at this moment was for those affected.
"We know from many of them how destructive experiences of abuse can be for a whole life," said the bishop. At the same time, he thanked the researchers for taking on the burdensome task of coming to terms with the abuse. The study is an important, necessary and at the same time painful step on the path to finding the truth. "Together with the expert committee responsible in the diocese, I would like to consciously take time in the coming days to read and reflect on the study thoroughly."
