Bishop warns parliament of ‘worst human catastrophe’ in Sudan during final speech

The retiring Bishop of Leeds has used his final speech in parliament to warn of the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Bishop Nick Baines called for “concerted and determined attention and action” in response to mass killings, sexual violence, starvation and the displacement of millions.

An estimated 150,000 people have been killed during the civil war, which began in April 2023.

Bishop Nick told the House of Lords: “The suffering in Sudan is almost unbearable, the worst humanitarian catastrophe on the planet, and it is neither new nor simply a phenomenon of only the last three years.”

“Whatever the causes of and motivations behind the current conflict, it is civilians—women, children, young men and vulnerable ethnic groups—who are being targeted and abused in the most inhumane ways,” he added.

Bishop Nick called for stronger diplomatic, economic and military efforts from the UK to end the conflict and protect civilians. He warned that inaction would worsen refugee migration, cycles of violence and generational trauma.

His speech came a couple days before two churches in the city of Port Sudan were vandalised in what appears to be a targeted attack.

Bishop Nick stepped down on Sunday, having served as the Bishop of Leeds for more than a decade.
